Trier – Rome of the North
TRIER – ROME OF THE NORTH
ARCHITECTURE, LIGHT AND HISTORY IN PHOTOGRAPHIC DIALOGUE, ARTISTIC URBAN PHOTOGRAPHY BETWEEN ANTIQUITY AND THE PRESENT
This photographic book is dedicated to the city of Trier, a place shaped by more than 2,000 years of history. Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages and the present day remain visibly intertwined, forming a dense and layered urban landscape. The photographs by Marc Theis present Trier as a city shaped by time: calm, precise, and far removed from touristic clichés. The visual sequences are accompanied by texts by author Achim Schwiers.
A PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOK ON TRIER
Trier – Rome of the North brings together a selection of artistic photographs from one of Europe’s oldest cities. Rather than approaching Trier in a conventional documentary manner, the book follows an aesthetic and focused visual language. Architecture, urban spaces and details take centre stage. Roman structures, sacred interiors and contemporary urban forms are not depicted as historical backdrops, but as living spaces in which history continues to resonate.
The photographs invite contemplation. Above all, they offer an experience of visual pleasure. At the same time, they may spark curiosity about the historical contexts that have shaped the city for more than 2000 years.

TRIER BETWEEN ANTIQUITY AND THE PRESENT
TRACES OF TIME WITHIN THE URBAN SPACE
Trier is exceptional for the density of its history. Traces of Roman antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era meet within a confined urban space — in monumental buildings as well as in quiet, often overlooked details.
This photographic book makes that complexity visible. The city is not presented chronologically, but as a spatial structure in which time, architecture and everyday life are interwoven. At the end of the book, a historical overview traces Trier’s development from 16 BC to the present day. Key terms, figures and events provide a deeper point of entry into the city’s history.
THE PHOTOGRAPHIC PERSPECTIVE OF MARC THEIS
In his work, photographer Marc Theis combines contemporary documentation with artistic precision. Urban space and architecture are re-experienced through light, perspective and carefully selected framing. His photographs are never incidental. Each motif is carefully prepared, each image consciously composed. Nothing is left to chance. With an analytical eye, Theis identifies the structures, details and viewpoints that reveal the essence of a place.
The focus often rests on elements that tend to be overlooked in everyday life. This results in image sequences of narrative density, developing their own atmosphere and revealing the inner rhythm of architectural spaces.

CONTEXT AND FOREWORD
In the foreword, Bülent Gündüz describes Marc Theis’s work as precise, charged with tension and marked by strong narrative clarity. The photographs open up access to urban spaces that often remain closed to us in everyday life. The book therefore understands itself not merely as a photographic volume, but as an artistic reflection on the city, space and perception.
